Pendery Center is one of two performing arts centers in the Wyoming School District for grades K-12. It seats 642 guests, but its capacity can be increased to about 800 seats if needed on a rainy graduation day. During the year, Pendery will host performers of all ages, staff inservices, and Wyoming community groups. In theatre vernacular, Pendery Center is seldom dark. Not only does WTAD (the drama troupe) rehearse on its stage and in its dressing room, but Pendery’s lobby and mirrored hallway are the rehearsal spaces for Wyoming High School’s Color Guard, Dance Team, Cheerleaders, and, occasionally, the track and wrestling teams. Of course, the lobby is also Wyoming High School’s dance hall, for both the fall and winter homecoming celebrations. This large lobby also hosts the Foreign Language Society and the Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremonies, as well as high school exams.
In addition, WHS’s music classes meet in the Pendery Center, in rehearsal rooms that have been specifically designed for the role. Due to the number of concerts held within its walls, Pendery Center’s stage is gigantic. In fact, it is so large that the Theatre Arts Department was able to construct rotating two-story sets for such shows as Noises Offand A Christmas Carol. Because of its incredible size, the audience can even join the cast on the stage for any experimental theatre or Black Box production, as they have done for a summer production of Steel Magnolias, a drama A Piece of My Heart, as well as our performances of Unnatural and Accidental Women.
The most remarkable thing about Pendery Center is not the size of the stage, or the services that the Center provides, but rather that, like Fay Auditorium before it, the drama students remain its front-line caretakers and technicians. Our Pendery staff, like those before them, possess a real sense of ownership and proprietorship of the auditorium. These hardworking students prepare and maintain the Pendery Center, and provide all of the services that may be requested by our guests and clients. These dedicated high-schoolers represent Wyoming High School just as visibly as any athletic team or staff member does.
